3 Repair Tips To Get Your Furnace Working
Your furnace has a big job to do every winter. It runs for nearly six months of the year and is a necessary appliance in your home. This major appliance is not one that you want to have to buy too often in your lifetime, and it should last upwards of 15 to 20 years. If your furnace is on the older side, you're going to see some breakdowns, hopefully not any that requires a replacement before it's lifetime. If your furnace has stopped working, there are a few things you can do. Read on for helpful tips.
1. Reset The High Limit Switch
Your furnace could have overheated and the high limit on the furnace could have caused it to turn off. If this is the case, you need to figure out what caused the high limit to be reached and you are also going to need to reset the high limit switch. First, check the air filter to see if it's clogged with dirt and debris. If it is, be sure to change it and replace it with a new one. Once you change the air filter, clean the inside of the furnace as well to be sure it isn't also clogged with dirt, then reset the high limit switch. Turn your furnace back on and test it to see if it's working properly.
2. Clean The Flame Sensor
If the flame sensor is too dirty, it isn't going to be able to keep a flame for long, which means your furnace isn't going to be able to stay lit and heat your home. If you notice that you aren't getting a flame in your furnace, try cleaning the flame sensor with a small piece of emery cloth. Gently rub the sensor with the emery cloth to remove grime that has built up from soot, then check your furnace to see if it is working properly.
3. Call A Professional
If your furnace isn't working properly, the problem may be something that you can't fix on your own, and you should hire a professional instead of attempting the repair on your own. If your furnace is not turning on, call a professional to get it working again.
